Main Task

In my group for my final coursework task there was myself, Becky and Harri. In the remainder of the lesson when once we were told that we had to split our group, we immediately decided that we wanted to come up with a new storyline that lesson so that we could begin filming that following weekend when we were all free.

After a long brainstorm, we all explained what horror films we found the scariest and which type of storyline would not only work best but also that it could be easily filmed and edited the way that we wanted it in the remaining amount of time that we had to film it. By the end of the lesson we had come up with a basic outline of what the storyline would be based upon and how we were going to do it. We spent the following lesson that we had the morning after creating our final storyboard so that we knew exactly what we would be doing the following day (the Saturday and Sunday of that weekend).

We came to the conclusion that the main feature of horror films that we found the scariest were that of the ones that included young children and ghosts. We also asked our friendship group if they would pay money at the cinema to see a film surrounding these two aspects of horror and if they in general found thm scary. Since the majority of people agreed with our basic idea we decided to go ahead and start planning how and when we were going to film it.

The main role of our film was going to be a young girl named Katie, aged 8. We decided against using a family member of my own who is 8 because we felt concerned the whether she would be able to follow direction as easy as someone our own age who could carry off being roughly that age if put styled correctly. Therefore we decided to use friend Ellie Duckles as she is very petite and has studied drama for both her GSCE and As level course, so we felt that she would be idea for the role as not only was she able to carry off playing the role that we needed but also as she would be easy to direct as she had been used to it from studying drama both in and out of school for a number of years.

Our final idea
We decided that the opening shot of the film would be a panning shot of Katie running up a driveway and into a house which had a 'for sale' sign on a small patch of grass outside. There would be a dissolve shot into a two shot of Katie and her mother (played by myself) in the kitchen, the two would be in conversation about moving house and how Katie was feeling.

There would then be a jump cut to a close up 'sold' sign outside of a secluded small house situated in a village. An over the shoulder shot would occur of the young girl looking out into her new room which would be surrounded with cardboard boxes, emphasising the fact of a move to a new house for an average family. This then being followed by a fading transition to a shot of the mother and daughter walking their dog down the village lanes when suddenly the daughter runs off as the mother loses concentration for a small period of time.

A jump cut would then show Katie peering into a graveyard with no dialogue as the camera pans around the graveyard with spooky music playing quietly in the background. The camera would then jump cut to a close up of one gravestone in particular with Katie continuing the read out the name (Thomas Wiltshire) and dates on the gravestone. Suddenly as soon as she has finished reading the name, it starts to get more mysterious and leaves begin randomly swirling around in the air behind her back. Unfazed by it all, Katie skips home whilst a tracking shot follows her on her journey.

Back at home, in the new kitchen, both the mother and Katie sit face to face across a table discussing Katies new friends, when she mentions Thomas who followed her home from the graveyard ( the ghost). Then the film continues with lots of mysterious happenings surrounding Katie and her new 'friend', and finally finishing with 3 short jump cuts of different scenes in which Katie is in danger. Leading to the opening of the film ending with a blackout.
